TikTok For You Page: What It Is and How to Reset or Change It

November 7, 2026 · 8 min read

The TikTok For You page (FYP, also called the For You feed) is the personalized feed you see first when you open TikTok. TikTok picks its videos from what you watch, like, share, comment on and skip, plus details such as sounds, hashtags, your language and your location.

To reset it, go to Profile, the Menu button, Settings and privacy, Content preferences, then Refresh your For You feed. TikTok then shows popular videos and rebuilds the feed from your new interactions. A refresh can't be undone, and it doesn't touch your Following feed, profile or messages.

What FYP means on TikTok

FYP is short for For You page. TikTok's help center now calls it the For You feed and describes it as a personalized feed based on your interests and engagement. It's the default screen of the app, and TikTok says the more you use the app, the more the feed reflects your interests.

People use the term in two ways. Viewers mean their own feed ("my FYP is full of cooking videos"). Creators mean reach ("this video made it onto the FYP"), since a video recommended in many people's For You feeds gets far more views than one seen only by followers. The hashtags #fyp and #foryou come from that second meaning.

How the For You page decides what you see

According to TikTok's own explanation of its recommender systems, three groups of signals shape the For You feed:

  • Your interactions: videos you like, share, comment on, watch in full or skip, and accounts you follow back.
  • Content information: sounds, hashtags, number of views and the country where the video was posted.
  • User information: device settings, language, location, time zone and device type.

TikTok says that for most users the interactions, including how long you watch a video, generally weigh more than the rest. Back in 2020 the company already called finishing a longer video a strong indicator of interest, while device and account settings get lower weight because people don't actively choose them as preferences.

Two more points from TikTok's help pages explain a lot of odd feeds. First, the system also uses people with similar tastes: if others who liked the same videos as you also liked a new one, you may get it too. Second, TikTok deliberately mixes in content outside your known interests to help you discover new things, and it says its rules try to interrupt repeated recommendations of content such as extreme fitness or dieting.

You can ask TikTok why a single video showed up. Tap the Share button on a post in the For You feed and pick Why this post. Reasons include that you engaged with similar posts, that the post is popular in your country or new, or that you follow the creator.

How to reset or refresh your For You page

TikTok added a refresh option in March 2023. The company described it as a way to see your For You feed as if you had just signed up. Here are the steps from TikTok's help center:

  1. Open your profile. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Open Settings and privacy. Tap the Menu button (three lines) at the top, then tap Settings and privacy.
  3. Go to Content preferences. Tap Content preferences.
  4. Refresh the feed. Tap Refresh your For You feed and follow the steps on screen. Once you refresh, it can't be undone.

In some regions there's a shortcut from the feed itself: press and hold a post or tap Share, then Why this video, Adjust your For You and Refresh your For You feed.

What happens next matters more than the button. After a refresh, TikTok shows popular videos, and your likes, comments and watch time on those decide what the feed turns into. If you watch the same kind of video to the end as before, you'll get the old feed back. TikTok also says a refresh doesn't override settings you already chose and doesn't affect accounts you follow, your inbox or ads.

Other ways to change your For You page

A full reset is the blunt tool. TikTok lists several finer ones in its help center:

  • Not interested: tell TikTok you don't care for a post, and it shows fewer posts like that.
  • Filter keywords: hide videos that contain certain words, their variations or hashtags from your For You and Following feeds and others. TikTok says you can let AI filter similar keywords, such as synonyms, too.
  • Manage topics: sliders for broad topics such as travel, nature or sports under Settings and privacy, then Content preferences. TikTok's June 2025 announcement says they change how often a topic is recommended but don't remove any topic entirely.
  • Personalized feeds off: in some regions, such as the EU, you can switch personalization off under Content preferences. The For You feed then becomes a Popular feed with videos that are popular in your region and internationally.

The quiet signals count as well. TikTok lists videos you watch in full or skip among the interactions it uses, so swiping past what you don't want is feedback too, even without tapping anything.

Why your For You page is bad, repetitive or not working

  • Bad or off-topic videos: part of the feed is meant to be outside your interests, because TikTok mixes in new creators and topics on purpose. If whole stretches feel wrong, tap Why this post on a few of them to see what the system thinks it learned, then use Not interested or a keyword filter.
  • The same kind of video over and over: usually a strong watch-time signal you sent without meaning to, such as rewatching a few videos of one kind. Manage topics and Not interested work better here than a full reset.
  • Just after a refresh: a feed full of popular, generic videos is normal for a while. TikTok says it shows popular content first to rebuild your recommendations.
  • Refresh not working or the same posts keep coming: TikTok asks you to send feedback through Need more help in the help center, saying whether it happens in the For You or Following feed and whether you see the same or different posts.

How to get on the For You page as a creator

There's no trick or hashtag that guarantees it. TikTok says follower count and whether an account had popular videos before are not direct factors in recommendations, although bigger accounts may still get more views because more people follow them. Each video is ranked by how likely viewers are to be interested in it, so what people do with the video counts most, especially whether they watch it through.

There's also a hard limit: posts must follow TikTok's Community Guidelines, and content that isn't suitable for a broad audience can be made ineligible for the For You feed and harder to find in search.

When the problem is the time, not the videos

A better feed is still a feed. If the real issue is that one more video turns into an hour, tuning the For You page won't change much, because a well-tuned feed is easier to keep watching, not harder. Two built-in tools help with the time itself:

  • TikTok's daily screen time: Profile, Menu, Settings and privacy, Time and well-being, Screen time, then turn on Daily screen time. When you hit the limit, TikTok notifies you and you can close the app or enter a passcode to keep going. For ages 13 to 17 it's on by default at 1 hour. The same screen has sleep reminders and a weekly summary.
  • Android's Digital Wellbeing: shows how much time TikTok really takes and can put a timer on the whole app. Our guide on checking screen time on Android walks through it.

Both are easy to dismiss, which is fine if a reminder is all you need. If what pulls you in is the swipe itself, an app that blocks the swipe to the next video is another route; we compare the options in our list of apps to block Shorts, Reels and TikTok on Android. Dam It! is one of them and works only on Android, not on iPhone. For the bigger picture of why endless feeds are so hard to stop, see what doomscrolling means and the history of infinite scroll.

Questions people ask

What does FYP mean on TikTok?

FYP stands for For You page, the personalized feed TikTok shows when you open the app. TikTok now calls it the For You feed. Creators use #fyp in the hope of reaching that feed, but TikTok doesn't say the hashtag helps.

How do I reset my TikTok For You page?

Go to Profile, tap the Menu button, then Settings and privacy, Content preferences and Refresh your For You feed. TikTok then shows popular videos and rebuilds the feed from what you watch and like next. The refresh can't be undone.

Does refreshing the For You feed delete my followers or likes?

No. TikTok says only the For You feed is affected. Your Following feed, profile, inbox and ads stay as they were, and settings you already chose still apply.

Can I turn off the For You page on TikTok?

Not everywhere. In some regions, such as the EU, you can turn off personalized feeds under Content preferences, and the For You feed becomes a Popular feed. It doesn't disappear. Elsewhere you can only tune it with Not interested, keyword filters and Manage topics.

Why is my TikTok For You page suddenly different?

Usually because your recent viewing changed: a few videos watched to the end can shift the feed fast. TikTok also mixes in new topics on purpose, and after a refresh it shows popular videos for a while.
