Time Wasting Calculator
Type in how many hours a day go to scrolling short videos and feeds. The numbers below update as you go. It is a rough estimate from one figure, so treat it as a sense of scale, not a measurement.
At 2 hours a day, that is about 30.4 full 24-hour days every year. Add your age to see the projection to 80.
How This Is Worked Out
Hours per day multiplied by 365 gives hours per year. Divide by 24 and you get full days. If you enter an age, the same daily habit is projected forward to age 80, then expressed in 24-hour days and in years of waking life, where a waking day is 16 hours.
Worked example: 2 hours a day is 730 hours a year, or 30.4 full days. For a 25-year-old that is 55 more years, 40,150 hours, or about 6.9 years of waking life. Work weeks assume 40 hours and films assume 2 hours.
Hours Per Day, at a Glance
If you would rather read it off a table than type it in, here is the same arithmetic for common daily totals. The last column assumes you start at 25 and keep the habit until 80.
| Per day | Full days per year | 40-hour work weeks per year | Years of waking life, age 25 to 80 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | 15.2 | 9.1 | 3.4 |
| 2 hours | 30.4 | 18.2 | 6.9 |
| 3 hours | 45.6 | 27.4 | 10.3 |
| 4 hours | 60.8 | 36.5 | 13.8 |
| 5 hours | 76.0 | 45.6 | 17.2 |
| 6 hours | 91.2 | 54.8 | 20.6 |
| 8 hours | 121.7 | 73.0 | 27.5 |
How Much Do People Actually Spend?
DataReportal's analysis of GWI survey data put the global average at about 2 hours 21 minutes a day on social media in early 2025 (DataReportal). That is 141 minutes, which works out to roughly 36 full days a year. Averages hide a wide spread, though: plenty of people sit well above or well below it, and survey self-reports tend to be rough. Your own phone's report is the better number to start from.
What the Numbers Do Not Say
Age 80 and 16 waking hours are round assumptions, not predictions. Nobody holds a habit constant for fifty years, and some of the time you spend on a phone is worth having: messages, learning, a video you chose and enjoyed. The point is the portion you would not choose on reflection, which is usually the stretch after the first reason for picking up the phone has ended. If you want to know why that stretch is so sticky, we wrote about how infinite scroll was built and how autoplay removed the stopping cue.
Getting Some of It Back
What works best is usually structural: fewer notifications, apps off the home screen, a timer that interrupts you at launch. Tools like Opal or One Sec do that for whole apps. For the feed itself on Android, Dam It blocks the swipe-to-next-video loop in YouTube Shorts, Reels and TikTok, while videos you open on purpose still play.
Questions
How does the time wasting calculator work?
Hours per day multiplied by 365 gives hours per year, and dividing by 24 gives full days. If you add your age, the same daily habit is projected forward to age 80. Waking-life share assumes 16 waking hours a day.
Is this my real screen time?
No. It is an estimate built from the single number you enter, not a measurement. For your actual figure, check Digital Wellbeing on Android or Screen Time on iPhone, and keep in mind that those totals include everything you do on the phone, not only feeds.
How much time does the average person spend on social media?
Globally about 2 hours 21 minutes a day in early 2025, according to DataReportal's analysis of GWI data. That is roughly 36 full days a year.
How many years of my life will I spend on my phone?
It depends on the hours and your age. At 3 hours a day from age 25 to 80 it is about 10 years of waking life, and at 2 hours about 7. The calculator above gives your own figure.
How many hours of screen time a day is too much?
There is no single threshold that fits everyone. What matters more is what the time displaces, such as sleep, movement and people, and whether you would choose it on reflection. Use the calculator as a prompt, not a verdict.
Why age 80 and 16 waking hours?
They are round, stated assumptions, not predictions. Life expectancy in many countries is close to 80, and most adults sleep about 8 hours. Habits also change over a lifetime, so treat the long-range figure as an illustration of scale.
Does the calculator store or send what I enter?
No. The arithmetic runs in your browser. Your numbers are not sent anywhere or saved, apart from being mirrored into the page address so you can share a result as a link. The site counts anonymous visits without cookies; see the Privacy Policy.
How can I get some of that time back?
Changes that add friction beat promises to try harder: turn off notifications, move apps off the home screen, set app timers, or block the feed itself. On Android, Dam It! blocks the swipe-to-next-video loop inside YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok while leaving the rest of each app usable.
