How to Disable or Block Instagram Reels on Android (Without Losing DMs)

Updated November 1, 2026 · 5 min read

You can't disable or turn off Reels on Instagram: the app has no setting that removes them. You can make them less sticky: tune Your Algorithm in the Reels tab, mark clips Not interested, switch your home feed to Following and set a daily limit. None of these stops the swipe to the next Reel.

To stop the endless Reels swipe while keeping DMs, stories and posts, use an Android app that blocks the swipe inside the Reels feed. To block Instagram completely, use an app timer or Focus mode in Digital Wellbeing.

Why Reels is so hard to avoid

Reels isn't one screen you can skip. It has its own tab, fills much of Explore, and suggested Reels are mixed into the home feed. That's why "I'll just reply to one message" so often turns into twenty minutes: the video feed sits along every path through the app. Changing one place leaves the others open.

Option 1: Tune "Your Algorithm"

Instagram introduced Your Algorithm in late 2025. It lists the topics Instagram thinks you're interested in and lets you see more or less of each, or type in topics yourself. It started in the US in English and was set to expand.

  1. Open the Reels tab. Tap the Reels icon at the bottom of Instagram.
  2. Open Your Algorithm. Tap the Your Algorithm icon at the top right of the Reels tab.
  3. Turn topics down. Reduce the topics you drift into without enjoying them, and add the ones you actually want.

It improves what you see. The feed still never ends.

Option 2: Mark Reels as Not interested

Open the menu on any Reel and choose Not interested. Used consistently, it shifts recommendations over a few weeks. It works against a system built to bring you back, so expect to repeat it.

Option 3: Switch the home feed to Following

Instagram's home feed can show only accounts you follow, in order. That calms the home feed, but the Reels tab and Explore are separate, and that's where most of the scrolling happens.

Option 4: Set a daily limit

In Instagram's settings, in the time-management section (the name varies by version), you can set a daily reminder. Like most reminders, it can be dismissed.

If you keep dismissing reminders, the problem is the loop, not the topics. Dam It! stops the swipe to the next Reel and leaves the rest of Instagram alone.

Option 5: Block the Reels swipe, keep the rest

A feed-level blocker intercepts the gesture that loads the next Reel. You can still open a Reel a friend sends, reply to messages and watch stories. On Android, Dam It! does this in the background with no account:

  1. Install Dam It!. Install it from Google Play. No account, no email.
  2. Enable the Accessibility Service. Grant the one permission it asks for. It reads no screen content and sends nothing off your phone.
  3. Open Reels. Swipe up in the Reels feed. The current Reel keeps playing, the next one doesn't load.
  4. Pause when you choose to. Hold the dashboard button to pause protection on the days you want to scroll.

If you want to block the whole Instagram app

Sometimes the answer is less Instagram altogether. Android's Digital Wellbeing has two built-in ways:

  • App timer: Settings, Digital Wellbeing and parental controls, tap Instagram, then App timer. After your daily limit the app pauses until midnight.
  • Focus mode: in Digital Wellbeing, choose distracting apps to pause during set hours. Their icons grey out and their notifications are hidden until focus time ends.

Both lock messages and stories as well. If you only want the feed gone, a swipe blocker is the lighter option.

A week-long plan

  1. Day 1: note how long Instagram ran today in Digital Wellbeing. That's your baseline.
  2. Days 2 to 4: cut topics in Your Algorithm and mark a few Reels as Not interested each day.
  3. Days 5 to 7: compare the minutes. If they barely moved, the topics weren't the problem. Add something that stops the swipe.

The time wasting calculator shows what your daily minutes add up to in a year.

Questions people ask

Can you turn off or disable Reels on Instagram?

No, Instagram has no setting that removes Reels. You can reduce them with Your Algorithm, Not interested, the Following feed and a daily limit, or stop the swipe with a blocker app on Android.

How do I remove Reels from my Instagram feed?

You can't remove them completely. Switching the home feed to Following keeps suggested posts out of the home feed, and Not interested and Your Algorithm change what Reels shows you. The Reels tab and Explore stay, so to use Instagram without Reels on Android, block the Reels swipe with an app.

Can I still watch Reels my friends send me?

Yes. Reels opened from a chat or a link still play. A swipe blocker only stops the swipe to the next Reel in the feed.

Will blocking Reels block my messages?

Not with a feed-level blocker or Instagram's own settings. An Android app timer or Focus mode is different: they lock the whole app, messages included.

How do I block the Instagram app completely on Android?

Use Digital Wellbeing: set an App timer for Instagram, or add it to Focus mode for set hours. Both are built into most Android phones and free.

Does this work for Facebook Reels?

Dam It! covers Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, TikTok and TikTok Lite, not Facebook. Check what each tool supports before installing.
